COMMUNICATION ACCESS REALTIME TRANSLATION (CART)

What is CART?

CART, Communication Access Realtime Translation, is an instant speech-to-text translation of the spoken word using a Stenographic machine to translate from Steno into English using Realtime translation software. CART or Realtime Captioning is required in any setting under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when requested by individuals in order to ensure equal access and equal opportunity.

What are the benefits of CART? 

Realtime Captioning (CART) is utilized anywhere communication access is needed such as for students in a classroom setting including K-12, colleges, universities, trade schools, graduations, IEP meetings. Other venues including employment settings such as staff meetings, conferences, medical appointments, depositions/courtroom appearances and more. Printed transcripts are provided and can be used to study or referred to at a later time.

DEMONSTRATIONS

Situations that a demonstration may be requested:

PRIVATE SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

Classes can be provided for individuals or small groups wishing to learn sign language. 

  • This is the first time a Deaf/Hard of Hearing consumer has been introduced to CART and would like to try before committing to these services. 

  • Parents are interested in how CART may help their child in school and would like to try before requesting on their child’s IEP.

  • A conference coordinator may want to see how CART can be used for their participants and the logistics of setting up screens.

  • Demonstrations are given free of charge in person with the consumer and remotely.

COMMUNITY AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

Training and awareness can be provided to the community such as first responders, police, counselors, social workers, and parents working with Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals.
